Guest Blogger Exclusive – Claudia Todman’s Model Diary from #NYFW and beyond..
I met Claudia in late June last year and ever since then, together we have shared a mutual appreciation for all things fashion. Claudia just so happens to be right in the thick of it at the moment, fashion that is. Whether she’s traveling the globe to model for the world’s hottest designers or walking in fashion weeks from Paris to New York – she’s likely as in the thick of it as one could possibly could be at present. So who better to enlist as my latest International Guest Blogger, none other than Perth’s latest IT girl and international model of the moment, Claudia Todman.
After departing New York and headed for another fashion capital on her international fashion week circuit (aka fashion month, aka Claudia’s been going since January – fashion month..s?), it’s early afternoon in Milan as I write this and Claudia is online and ready to introduce herself.
Above & below: Digitals at BCBG, NYFW casting
Hometown: Landsdale, Western Australia
Mother Agency: Chadwick, Perth
Other Agencies: NYC (Click/Re:quest), Milan (Fashion), Paris (City), Hong Kong (Quest), New Zealand (Unique).
Fashion Weeks This Season: Men’s shows Milan (15th – 19th Jan), Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, Paris (24th – 29th Jan), New York Fashion Week (11th – 18th Feb), Milan (coming up – 24th – 29th Feb) and on to Paris Fashion Week, Autumn/Winter (1st – 9th March 2016).
Style Voyeur: How did you get discovered? Claudia: My friend, Hayley Parry who is a friend of Tanya Petkovic (my now agent in Perth) introduced me to Chadwick Models and Vanda, a former Chadwick booker and Tanya signed me on the spot.
When I was 16, my mum and sister bribed me into doing grooming and deportment classes as I was a tomboy and didn’t know how to do hair or make-up or even colour coordinate my clothing, so I did modeling classes and my teacher thought I had some potential. Then and there I joined the modeling industry and really enjoyed it. At the time I was with Aloha models.
Fave thing about modeling? Oh there’s too many things! Partying with celebrities at the MTV music awards after party in Milan, walking for Christian Siriano in New York City, where I met the world’s most incredible model, Coco Rocha.
Worst/Weirdest/Most Embarrassing experience to date? Probably just falling asleep at castings, although no one ever notices, besides the other models, of course.
How do you prepare yourself for the international fashion circuit? I have affirmation cards that I read before I leave the house to go to castings. I also do yoga when I can to centre myself.
Any tricks of the trade you have learnt along the way? To pack light! You soon figure out what you actually use and don’t use. Being organised is such an important part of it. The traveling is very difficult, going from city to city, back to back and making sure you are still looking your best. It’s hard work. I carry concealer with me and spare clothes on the plane to change into so I feel fresh if I have to go straight to a casting off the plane. I eat lots of fruit and vegetables and protein to help stay in shape as it’s hard to get to the gym. Drinking lots of water is very important as running around makes you so dehydrated. Staying positive and calm is key too.
Claudia’s Model Diary: Backstage at Viktor & Rolf in Paris for Haute Couture 2016 in January. Walking for Viktor & Rolf was a walk I’d never done before this year. Having half of my face covered was a challenge to say the least. For me, the clothes play a big part in how I walk down the runway. Viktor & Rolf’s collection was very structural and shapely (it always is). The objective was to make sure I had to show off every piece of the garment on the runway.

New York is all about LOVE and HOPE. I live by these two words. Being a model requires you to love yourself as you are, you are the tool, you are the key product. And then comes hope, to hope that you still know that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.
