Natural Inspiration

Nicholas Kirkwood x Rodarte shoes SS11

I grew up in the hills on a big property in the bush and spent my days as a child making fairy beds, collecting chicken eggs and avoiding snakes in the grass. Even though I have always really been a ‘city girl’ at heart and couldn’t wait to go to Europe the minute I left school, my family have always been very ‘green’ and lived in semi-rural places. My dad also lived in Yallingup for 10 years until very recently and his property was even more bushy than where I was brought up, so basically my whole life I have been surrounded by the bush. I used to hate it and as a teenager rebelled against my mother’s hippy ways but now that I am a bit older I have come to appreciate my heritage a lot more. I have come to realise that I actually feel very comfortable surrounded by nature and it is incredibly calming to the soul. Recently on a trip home to visit my family we all went to Serpentine Dam. None of us had been before and it was a beautiful day. We got to hold parrots, drink a delicious wine from Jarrahdale and I took a bunch of photos.

I have always said to budding stylists – put your phone down, look up and look around you! Absorb everything you see like a sponge and if you really take notice of your surrounds, everything and anything can inspire your creative mind. My whole life I have been like this, I literally get off on visuals and last night when I was looking through these photographs I thought I would show you a glimpse into how my mind works. Here are some of my ‘natural inspirations’ from my trip to the bush and I hope you enjoy 🙂

NB: I do not condone Rodarte’s insensitive decision to profit from the use of Australian Aboriginal culture as part of their AW12 collection. The images featured above in fact pay tribute to the traditional owners of our land and are meant to simply signify beauty. If you have no idea what I’m referring to...follow the link.
