Opening Night Telstra Perth Fashion Festival

247-TPFF2015-dilettante-opening-show-6234

The Opening Night show of Telstra Perth Fashion Festival saw high end boutique Dilettante present three of their design stars on the runway – Yang Li, Toni Maticevski and 33 Poets. Each designer captured a different aesthetic, yet all three were of an exceptional standard and there was no question they held their own strength amongst one another. Yang Li is a Perth born designer who has created such a standing in the industry since growing up as a kid in Inglewood, he now shows alongside the likes of Chanel and Dior on the official Paris Fashion Week schedule each season. Diana Paolucci, owner of Dilettante has remained good friends with the designer and is one of the very few boutiques to stock the label in Australia. Diana attends his shows each season and it is beacuase of their close relationship that we were lucky enough to have his incredible designs on Perth’s best runway at TPFF.

Above – top model Kia Low who was flown in from Brisbane exclusively to open the show for Dilettante and who has walked for over 100 International shows in the past two seasons poses for the SV lens wearing Yang Li. She was such a delight to behold!

Since Dilettante reopened recently after a revamp renovation,  Toni Maticevski AKA the current darling child of the Australian fashion industry was brought into the Dilettante fold and just like the freshly painted walls, the Sydney based designer has been embraced by all who have the means to acquire his wares. And for those who don’t, they certainly got the chance to covet this beautiful designer’s collection in what was a breathtaking display for the first night of the Festival.

33 Poets is a local label designed by artist, Rebecca Paterson who has long been known in the WA industry for her interesting creations that are as high fashion as they are wearable art. I call Rebecca an artist with no touch of pretention – she is simply the definition of one and has inspired a breed of young designers to create original works that say something new and unique. Originality is so so hard to come by in a small industry like Perth that is doing everything it can to be taken seriously and gain momentum with a commercial focus but Rebecca re-writes the rules and fears nothing, yet her collection was still sellable. That tenacity and talent saw her designs come to the fore alongside big names in fashion and I am proud to see a show of this calibre hit the runways of Perth. Well done Dilettante, it would NOT have been possible without you.

Taste cannot be bought but at Dilettante you can easily own it.

ELLE Cocktail Party

IMG_03134

ELLE Boutique with Denise and Nigel Satterley AM invited me to celebrate the appearance of the 2015 Emirates Melbourne Cup with a cocktail party and fashion show last week. While many guests were thrilled to see the cup in person, I obviously wasn’t there for that reason alone and luckily managed to score a great spot backstage thanks to the helpful hosts.

ELLE Boutique’s Wendy Marshall was the founding father (mother) of luxury fashion retail  in Perth, being the first to bring high end International labels to the West. Everything she puts her hand to is truly exquisite and this event and the fashion on the runway was no exception. Thanks for having me ELLE and enjoy my backstage moments SV boys and girls.

H&M VIP Experience

IMG_0258

When I first received my invitation to the VIP H&M Shopping experience, I didn’t know if I would be able to attend. The time was 8:30am – 2pm on a school day and I thought, what on earth are we going to do in that time? The invitation came from my good friend Grant at Muse Bureau so I knew whatever it was, it was going to be epic so I planned the day off and left myself open to what could be in-store (pun intended.)

The only conundrum being that I recently saw a film about ‘Fast Fashion’ called The True Cost and ever since then I swore to myself  that I would no longer support companies who didn’t behave ethically or have any consideration for the environment. I didn’t remember seeing H&M mentioned in the film so again, I stayed open minded but this time on a mission to discover whether H&M was a company I could buy into (literally, OMG so many puns!).

We arrived early and were greeted by our very own H&M coffee which we pre-ordered along with our lunch via email a few days before – choosing a steak or gnocchi for an upcoming event and providing dietary requirements whilst sitting in a stuffy office a few days before brought me joy in itself and again filled me with anticipation for the day.

IMG_0190re

Everyone who was meant to be there was, all the bloggers and ‘influencers’ who had relevance to this particular event showed up and embraced the impending road trip to Joondalup.

IMG_0198

Guess who>? Do I really need to spell it out for you? Those clutches, THOSE shoes!!

IMG_0199

And then what seemed like hundreds of black tinted vans pulled up at The Flour Factory to take us in groups to the H&M Joondalup store.

I was lucky to get to spend both trips with dear friends in this industry and our conversations were a breath of fresh air that added so much to the experience. It’s not often we get to spend much time hanging out, usually at events it is all air kisses and small talk but these trips to and from Joondalup thanks to our hosts were truly enjoyable and meaningful.

IMG_0249

Then we arrived. It is MASSIVE!!! Everything you could ever imagine is at H&M in Joondalup. I had also never been to the shopping precinct they have there, it is much more vibrant and chic than I thought it would be, a similar aesthetic to Claremont Quarter. They’ve done a great job.

IMG_0220

Whilst shopping I noticed we were each given a little booklet entitled H&M Conscious Actions Highlights 2014. I didn’t have time to read it but I duly noted it for later and went on.

IMG_0283

Upon arrival back at The Flour Factory for lunch we were all in awe of the INCREDIBLE space set up by Muse Bureau for H&M with floral displays by the one and only Rebecca Grace of Natural Art Flowers. Cool imagery was hung on canvases on the walls amongst hanging jungle.

IMG_0270

The food and drinks were TO DIE FOR! My images really do not do this event justice this time. It was just magnificent. Everyone had their own place setting and for the entire lunch which I felt more spoilt than I have in a long time! I hadn’t yet learnt about H&M’s conscious practices but I was soon to find out.

IMG_0269

During lunch I was lucky enough to sit opposite the PR from Sydney who I inevitably felt compelled to ask the hard questions of. Not really protocol after a day of free shopping and never ending delicacies on the house, however I had to know. To my complete and utter delight she was informed, unashamed and I was enlightened. What I learnt from that conversation and further research, far exceeded my expectations!

Here are some facts about H&M and their ethical practices – the first being the one that impressed me the most!

* H&M runs one of the world’s biggest retail garment collecting programmes. At almost every H&M store world-wide there are boxes where you can leave old clothes from ANY brand to give them a new life and at the same time they will give you a small reward. Their goal is to recycle as much of the material as possible into new garments. So instead of dumping your old clothing into op shop bins, you can take them to H&M and receive 15% off your next purchased item!

* H&M is the world’s biggest user of organic cotton, meaning 46% less climate impact than the use or conventional cotton

* H&M does not sell any real fur or angora wool and apply some of the strictest standards for animal welfare

* H&M and the H&M Conscious Foundation helped more than 430,000 people gain access to safe drinking water in developing countries together with WaterAid.

* H&M do not own factories, instead they work with 850 suppliers around the world. They were one of the first fashion brands to publish their list of supplier factories.

* H&M actively support fair living wages across the entire textile industry and have personally met the Prime Ministers of Bangladesh and Cambodia several times to promote higher minimum wages.

* H&M were one of the first companies to work with Greenpeace on the goal to achieve zero discharge of hazardous chemicals across their supply chain.

Pretty impressive huh?

Thank you for a beautiful day H&M.

And now I can say with my conscience clear, despite a beautiful day, free clothes and a stunningly divine lunch where we were all spoilt rotten, you REALLY should visit H&M – now open in Joondalup, WA.

TPFF2015 Program Launch

IMG_9563

Today I was backstage with more hats than usual on. Not only was I able to do Style Voyeur up close and personal, it is now my job to be involved. In February I started working at TPFF as the Industry Liaison and part of my role is to Produce the 2015 campaign. Today we presented that campaign via our new program to the media, alongside a fashion moment which featured designers from each of our shows at Fashion Paramount this year. The idea for today’s fashion moment was to represent the campaign brief which focused on high glamour and strength of character, primarily played out by our Festival Face, model Tiah Eckhardt – but today translated beautifully through all of our 13 models who took part in the showcase. We presented the campaign feel through the exquisite gowns each model wore and tied it all together with uniform moody hair and make-up. Each model was adorned with a custom made headpiece by Reny Kestel millinery in black worn over cascading wavy hair extensions that looked so natural it was effortlessly dramatic.

As you can see above and below, every element came together beautifully and that is in so small part thanks to the efforts of Bridget Hudson Styling, Make-up Artist Carol Mackie for MAC Cosmetics and Hair Director, Melanie at Reno’s for L’Oreal Professionnel.

For those who didn’t attend this morning, I hope this finds you well.

This shoot is a long time coming for me, not only because we shot it in April but because I had the idea for this shoot in my back pocket for years. I have always loved shoots with interesting kids taken off the streets, interviewed, styled – but with their own aesthetic kept in the mix – and flung in front of the camera to be put in print. I’ve always wanted to do more shoots like this, to show how real people can be just as compelling as models in print. It is so cool to finally make it a reality and share it with you all!!

They say there is something in the water in Perth, with the usual credits going to models, actors and talented musicians, however I think these faces are testament to the fact that regular people walking the streets can be just as incredible as any ‘personality’. I hand-picked each of these characters because I knew there was something special about them that the camera would pick up. How I got to choosing them was funny because, like I say, I have had this shoot in my mind forever.

Chebet – was pretty much the original inspiration for this shoot. When I first met her as a volunteer for Perth Fashion Festival I couldn’t get over how beautiful she was and that she wasn’t a model, a crime! I have been hoping she wouldn’t move cities for about 3 years because I never got around to doing anything about this idea until now. Once she was even going to dye her hair purple which freaked me out because it wasn’t my vision hahaha but luckily I got her perfectly natural when the time came.

Dhiva – I also met at PFF. I was backstage shooting for this very blog and was taking a break outside the backstage tent when she introduced herself. If was dark at night and all I remember was her bindi and her eyes, I was mesmerised. She got added to the list that very moment and about a year later I contacted her.

Jason – is Chebet’s friend but I met him years ago and he is actually in my mini documentary, INSIDE STYLE VOYEUR (which by the way if you haven’t seen, where have you been?>) he is good friends with top Perth male model, Mason Roberts and was always fun to muck around with at fashion events.

Lorraine – is usually my costume assistant for the work I do in film but I brought her along to help on this shoot as we shot two that day and the other was very much her vibe – Thom Kerr Shoots Amelleah – so I  knew she would be good to have on board. When ever we do film shoots someone is always trying to coax her into being an extra and this time she got roped in to being part of this shoot by Thom haha. I am so so glad she was involved, we have worked together for years now and she is a good friend. What a good sport and stunner taboot!

Olivia – was my intern for about 6 months last year and for some of this year. Again someone I added to the list in my minds eye from the moment we met! Our own Devon Aoki, represent!

Dani – I met at the opening of Miu Miu. She told me she was opening a store and I had to come and blog it – so I did. She is just such a cool cat and I am a huge fan of what her and her brother and finace are doing with Lessons Concept Store. Adding to the culture of our city, well Fremantle, one high-end Danish street wear label exclusive-to-Australia at a time. She is the essence of a cool kid and anything but pretentious.

Each of them beautiful inside and out. I think it is safe to now say that I was correct in thinking this would work!

SPECIAL THANKS to:

Adam Heath Boutique, Co Creative Agency, BrandE The Label, Aimee Chere Intimates, Pared Eyewear, Lessons Concept Store and my assistant Lorraine Koh!
