Tom Bull has been a crushworthy subject of mine since Style Voyeur’s inception, so when New York based Guest Blogger, Whitney Chalmers contacted me with the idea of shooting Tom and Tia at home together in New York City…well you can guess what I said. NO! IT’S NOT FAIR!!! These two together, It’s too much to handle! I don’t want to sicken girls around the world, including myself on a ‘couples’ story about one of the hottest male models on the planet and his beautiful girlfriend. The thought of Tom Bull finally off the market….it was a lot to take in. Then I took a moment, put my jaded and bitter self to the side and considered what it would be like to take a sneak peek inside their NYC lives and in true voyeur-style, re-considered. OF COURSE I had to say yes!

WARNING: Hearts are about to be broken!

Style Voyeur Guest blogger, Whitney Chalmers brings us this post all the way from New York City… below words and interview by Whitney for SV.

Just over the Williamsburg Bridge, I make my way to the water for a shoot at one of the many new high-rise buildings springing up around Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Today I’m bringing Style Voyeur readers an inside look at a day of dress up with Australian grown, New York based international model, Tom Bull and his fantastic girlfriend with beauty and brains – Engineer/Model, Tia Hayes.

With the help of my friend, Victor Tortch, a fashion and editorial photographer, we shot for a total of six hours capturing the many looks of Tom and Tia at their new home in Brooklyn.

I used a mixture of pieces, a delicious Ruth Tarvydas dress called French Kiss paired with some heels and jewelry from Saks Fifth Avenue gifted by Tom and enjoyed by the pair with scotch sans rocks. Tia is understated sexy with an effortless flair, her fantastic sequin skinny pants paired with a striped blazer came out for some pool. Tom’s a brand loyal kind of a guy. With a closet that he reckons changes every few months when he gets bored, some sentimental pieces always hang amongst the rest. His AXIOM sweater was given to him by one of his good mates, Australian professional body boarder turned designer – Josh Garner. Later the jetsetter gear is in full effect and Tom is pulling out the big guns, an amazing Cole Haan duffle bag. Tia is of course ever stylish in her leather jacket paired with a faux-fur vest on top to transcend this outfit from day to night.

By this point I should have expected what I found, an extensive luxury spa area with a huge pool, Jacuzzi and waterfall. To top it all off, you can enjoy a nice refreshing dip while taking in the impeccable Manhattan island views. The two are so at ease with one another. It’s clear to see why they are a dynamic duo. A huge thank you to the lovely couple for spending the day with Victor and I to capture the beauty in their lives and especially their closets!

What do you do with your free time when you’re not working… Golf, road trips, fly south during winter

What’s the best part about doing your job in New York… A lot of friends come through New York and a lot of clients around the world book out of New York

Do most of your friends in New York work in creative fields… Mostly, my mate Isaac Hindin-Miller has a fashion blog isaaclikes.com, Ljubo Golic also from Perth, is studying film at NYU, Greg Lewis (also from Perth) is a photographer… there are a few model peeps and then a few 9-5ers

Do you think your style has changed or evolved in any way by being in NY…  What I thought was my most stylish outfit on my first trip abroad, was my dads oversized suit, with a blue shirt and yellow tie. When my agent started laughing at me I quickly realised I had some ‘evolving’ to do, and over the years I’ve learnt a thing or two. I’ve got a lot more variety in my wardrobe now, I haven’t lost my Australian surfy dress sense but I’m inclined to rock different outfits pending the occasion

What’s the best part about doing your job in New York… I get to work on some large, complex projects – the highways here are massive. A few weeks ago I had a meeting about construction of the World Trade Centre site!

Favorite street in New York… Kent Avenue, Williamsburg. Both of my apartments have been on this street so it’s home to me, and it’s right next to the river with amazing views of the Manhattan skyline

Do timezones make it difficult to stay in touch with your Aussie friends and family… Yeah it does, it’s 13 hours difference. But when I’m waking up my family are home from work and when I’m going home from work my family are waking up, so we talk a lot at those times

I was invited to attend the Redkite Ae’lkemi Charity Show last week at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in Peppermint Grove by a wonderful woman, Ryah Prentice, whom I met at Fenella Peackock’s show the previous week. I gladly attended after hearing about the work of Redkite, an organisation who supports children and young people and their families through cancer by providing emotional, educational and financial support.

As soon as I arrived I was ushered backstage – basically my travelling home away from home – no matter where or what the event is. Style Voyeur being referred to as part of the furniture backstage at a shows these days is not an uncommon notion and I feel the below image is further proof of this. I walk in the door, pull back the curtain and amongst the usual suspects, Lauren Wood’s people doing hair and make-up, model’s getting primped and preened, see Jacqui Brown of Beautiful Events who hands me a bottle of black nail polish and says…….please? The photo is courtesy of model Fabienne Vanderhaeghen. I am wearing a dress by one of my absolute favourite WA designers, One Fell Swoop. Jacqui welcomed guests on behalf of Ae’lkemi’s, Alvin Fernandez and the event production and styling was thanks to Tony Salom of OMG Events.

This woman (who is a babe and I loved her 50′s sunglasses) reminds me of Rachel Zoe. I told her so and luckily she took it as a compliment.

Once again the brilliant WA fashion illustrator Pippa McManus ventured to Sydney and kindly brought Style Voyeur back some exclusive coverage from Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia. This time she focused on hair & beauty looks and as the rising talent has many publications seeking her fashion week goodies, I am one lucky girl to share this guest post with you all.

The first is soft and pretty Alice McCall with porcelain skin and baby blue eyelashes and simple pulled back hair. I was able to go backstage because Alice had given me permission when I emailed her the week before to ask. But I got hassled hard-core by PR people ect so I took a few quick snaps where I could and got out of there! This is something that happened every time I was backstage all week and was the only crap part to MBFW. Nicole pollard is amazing, couldn’t resist drawing her (she closed the show too).

The second was super cool Vanishing Elephant, the much hyped show of the week. I ran to the shuttle bus after Watson X Watson and caught it just round the corner to their off-location spot in Technology park, I probably could have walked quicker in hindsite! And Waited in the pit (squished up with pins and needles in my legs for more than half an hour. But the show was gorgeous and the front row was just as good (Pip Edwards looked amazing!). So floppy, soft, perfect blow wave with a smokey (but not overtly) eye and pinky peachy lips.

The third was Watson X Watson with the girl I wanted to be in high school: Surfer Chic. I did go to a coastal school so I was always in surf brands with salty hair and some bathers under my school uniform. But this was polished, confident surfer girl not self conscious, art-nerd trying to be a surfer fifteen year old. Half up half down, sea-salt sprayed hair with eyes the colour of a good tan and hot pastel pink lips. It suited every look that went down that catwalk, great styling!

Linneys celebrated having the original Vivienne Westwood wedding dress worn by Carrie Bradshaw in the Sex & The City film in store last week with a New York City style event. VIP clients turned up in droves and by my observations seemed to move in packs of 4, quite funny considering the film in which the night was based on. Guests were mostly clad in dazzling prints and sky high heels, and in our true resource rich, Western Suburbs environment (for out-of-towners, insert monied), one barely had to lean over one’s shoulder in order to spot a Chanel handbag draped amply over another’s arm.

While the showcase has just wrapped at their Subiaco premises, there is a rather exciting competition being held by Linneys in conjunction with this event – running until 30th April. If you are anything like me and love the thought of owning a black diamond ring, just like the one Big gave Carrie, then LIKE Linneys on facebook to enter… For more info, check out the details at the bottom of this post.

An exclusive Heath Ledger limited edition t-shirt has been created by Perth based designer, Elana Rosa in conjunction with New York based Photographer, Ben Watts to commemorate five years since Heath’s passing on January 22nd 2008.

This is the first time the Heath Ledger family has authorised the release of a product, which was made in celebration of Heath’s life.

As a huge fan of the late actor and a fellow Perth girl, it is with humbling pride that I announce Style Voyeur’s EXCLUSIVE – the story behind the creation of THE HEATH LEDGER COMMEMORATIVE T-SHIRT.

A limited number of shirts are available in three sizes - small, medium and large.

The t-shirt features an image of the Academy Award winning Actor, as his young self – shot through the skilful lens of Ben Watt’s (brother of Heath’s ex, Naomi Watts) in LA in 2004.

Style Voyeur caught up with Heath’s step-sister and designer, Elana Rosa for all the details on this Ledger family collaboration with Ben..

Style Voyeur: What is the reason you decided to take on this initiative?

Elana Rosa: We were having a family discussion about how to celebrate Heath’s life and the things he loved. We wanted to commemorate him and carry on his legacy and support those charities that he always did.

SV: Can you share with us some details about the shoot Ben and Heath did that day, back in 2004…

Ben writes..

“We shot down in the LA river, I wanted to shoot something that Heath could have fun with and not about the fashion or just being good looking….which I knew he would not be so happy with. Heath loved surfing and skating so I knew it would make for great day of pics which Heath would enjoy. We tried free boarding from a truck we took down in the dry river bed …….not a lot of people would be willing to give this a go …. it can be dangerous and we reached some pretty high speeds …… Heath ate it up, even gave us the signal to up the speed! We spent hours down there the time just flew by because he was loving it and so was I ……I think that day (with a bit of good planning and the magic of Heath), we effortlessly made some of the best pics I’ve ever taken.

The sun shone hot that day …..a day I will never forget”.

SV: Where was the photo taken, why was THIS the photo of choice?

ER: These images were shot in the dried up Los Angeles River, 2004. We thought this particular collaboration with an Australian photographer would be beautiful, and there was nothing more fitting than this image by Ben Watts. It is one of the families favourite images of Heath which was gifted to us by Ben in 2008. It was a great day for both Heath and Ben and as Ben says, “with the magic of Heath, we ‘effortlessly’ made some of the best pics I’ve ever taken.”

SV: What was involved in your design process? What fabrics were used?

ER: I had ‘Heath’s t-shirts’ in mind through the design process…I used a high quality cotton jersey, and perfected the print digitally. It is a limited edition t-shirt and we will not be re-producing this style at all.

After Heath’s passing in 2008, a restaurant and bar he had planned on opening in Brooklyn with partner Jud Mongell was left in doubt…Heath’s father Kim came to the party and invested in the business on behalf of Heath and so on September 17th 2008, FIVE LEAVES opened at 18 Bedford Avenue, on a five point intersection near the Greenpoint-Williamsburg boundary in Brooklyn. Rosa has never been to the restaurant but tells me she intends on hanging out there every day when she visits New York this coming June.

The restaurant was named after Nick Drake, one of Heath’s favourite artists – whom he had the rights to – Heath created Drake’s music video  ”Black Eyed Dog“. Read more here…

I found a wonderful article from the New York Times – A Brooklyn Restaurant In Heath Ledger’s Memory – tracing the evolution of his friendship with business partner, Jud Mongell and Interior Designer/ Tattoo Artist, Scott Campbell, in which the boys share their experiences being friends with the actor and tell the story of how this, now cult New York haunt came to be realised.

The Five Leaves interior is by SCOTT CAMPBELL whom has also collaborated on a collection for Louis Vuitton..

Funds from the sale of the t-shirt will directly benefit charities Heath supported during his successful career, including; TELETHON TRUST PERTH, specifically the Children’s Brain Research Centre within Princess Margaret Hospital and AUSTRALIAN’S IN FILM. The LA based ‘Heath Ledger’ Scholarship fund.

Tiffany & Co shut down King Street for a high profile event to launch Polo In The Valley the other night. With special guest, Ewan McGregor in tow, this night was poised to not be forgotten by attendees any time soon. Polo In The Valley takes place on Sunday, April 14th at Duncraig Stud in the Swan Valley and beneficiary charity, Youth Focus will again be supported this year.

Youth Focus is a unique, independent charity that supports young Western Australians suffering thoughts of suicide, depression and self harm by offering a range of free mental health services by highly trained counsellors. I believe Ewan attended the event in support of this cause.
