Being the way I am, it’s not often that I am impressed by new venues, especially when it comes to interiors. So often there are glimpses of taste and context in genres (if you’re lucky), however it is not usually carried all the way through.

There are a few exceptions, of course and Perth’s newest bar/restaurant, The Aviary, is certainly an exception.

The decor is well executed for such a large, double story space and the theme – true to its name – is carried out in so many clever ways, nicely pulled together across multiple platforms. From the bird wallpaper, the bird cage fixtures and the giant taxidermy peacock in the bar/restaurant on level one, named – The Birdcage, to the cocoon-like chairs and hidey-hole placement of certain seating areas upstairs in the open air rooftop bar – The Nest, The Aviary achieves exactly what it aims to.

As a loyal SV reader, you would know I recently explored many venue interiors through my travels in August and having seen so many sexy places doing it well, my friend and I became obsessed that there aren’t enough cool/relaxing places to go out in Perth. While it is not located in a beach setting (what Perth criminally lacks), The Aviary ticks the boxes in every other way. It is the closest venue I have come across to a Ku De Ta or Potato Head (even a little Ruby Rabbit from Sydney), this side of the Southern Hemisphere.

While nowhere is perfect (there are some random chess-like chairs in certain spots throughout the establishment that are out of place aesthetically), it comes close to being one of the most interesting spaces in town, merely for the decor. If you add to the mix the stunning views from the rooftop, its almost retro glamour that works so well with the semi-old world aviary theme, the convenient location, right in the heart of the city centre, as well as its sheer size (queuing to get into this venue shouldn’t be a problem as it can comfortably host 600 people), The Aviary is well on its way to becoming the greatest new venue in town.

Quite frankly, Perth needs the Aviary and since there is finally a chic venue open until midnight every night of the week in the middle of the city, why not show them that this need is a strong one before they change their opening hours.
